I’ve been listening to them on Spotify for a little while now. They were recommended to me by my brother and as soon I heard them I was hooked. Which meant that the absolute moment when I heard they were going to be performing locally, I had to make it a point to see them live. I will be honest, I didn’t know what to expect from their performance. In hindsight, I wouldn’t have even imagined they would be as epic as they were. Everything about them was in sync. The choreography, the clothing choices, the entire performance was extraordinary. They had two moments in particular that stand out the most. First, there was one particular moment where the entire band hit the low end and carried it only to never be heard again. I felt it throughout my entire body. That note locked the crowd all in unison. And my favorite moment was the band solos. Each member had one song where they were highlighted and when it came time for the drummer, the entire band took a knee for him to be seen. Such respect in that moment alone. I am most certainly impressed.

Now, on to my photos and the photography aspect of the evening. Visually, I was looking forward to getting them in front of my lens. One of their things is that each member has a color and they own it. I mean they are head to toe and down to each detail in that regard. Mic stands, mics, monitors, instruments, outfits and for the ladies, even the polish. Purple, red, white, orange, yellow, pink, green and black. Take all that and mix it with their amazing lighting, I was in photography heaven as was Beast.

I decided to only take my 24-70mm out with me on this night as I didn’t want to carry too much gear. Careful planning on my part because I knew I would be jamming. They’re a power funk band from New York and you will need to see them if they visit your city.

My first stop was to check out Sunny South at a local Brewery, Lincoln’s Beard Brewing. I love this place. The food is great, the sound is on point and not to mention, I love playing with the lighting when a band is performing.  Even when I’m editing their shots in post, I love making them as colorful as possible. Yes, I dislike converting to black and white. I will only when the shot calls for it but more often than not, I play up the colors as much as a I can. Let me see I had a field day with the colors that night. 

I’m glad that I got that chance before heading out to the next venue though you will see why in the posts to follow. For now, I wanted to bring to you my favorite shots from the Beard. As always I listed the full set on my Facebook page. It’s less than my usual upload though it’s not necessarily a bad thing. I know you all lead busy lives and to browse through too many photos will take up more time than necessary. 

Of course I was there for some Blues and Brews. I also may have snuck out to the food trucks for one of the best Peanut Butter Sandwiches ever, The King. Oh man was that a delicious PB&J. Seriously, if you ever stop by Lincoln’s Beard, grab a peanut butter sandwich. It not only indulges your inner child, it goes great with the beer. That’s it for now, though. I still have two more bands to work on in post and the clock ticks by.

No matter how many shots we take, as photographers, we all come away with our favorite shots of the night. I wanted to bring you mine from this particular night at the Elbo Room in Ft. Lauderdale. First off, this place was hot an sweaty, yet that did not take away from my having a good time both behind the lens and otherwise. While I definitely needed a shower when I got home, it was certainly a great night. I took quite a few shots. Some were fun, some artsy, and some.. well, let’s just say I wanted you guys to see the good times to be had. Those that know me, know that shooting in a studio has definitely been on my to-do list. Something about the equipment, the instruments, the sound, it’s like a perfect combo.Well, imagine my excitement when I got the news that the original venue for the performance was shut down and they had to scramble for a location in order to perform for their friends and family that night. After all, it was the guitarist’s birthday and why not their studio? So off I went to Flower Blade for a good old fashioned warehouse party complete with live music. I couldn’t go wrong.  So here they are, my favorite shots for the night. Yes, I was a bit partial to the bassist. He’s my baby brother, how can I not be? lol
