Blackbirds, Art Official at Wynwood Yard

“Photography for me is not looking, it’s feeling. If you can’t feel what you’re looking at, then you’re never going to get others to feel anything when they look at your pictures.”

Ladies and Gentleman, THE MAIN SQUEEZE

Day in and day out I’ve been at this and let me just say it was well worth it.

I didn’t initially plan to go out last weekend, but my younger brother had mentioned to me that there was a funk band from Cali coming to play at Wynwood Yard that I really should check out. It was an automatic, “hell yeah, I’m down”. Who turns a good funk band? So off we went to the yard and I found myself excited. I wasn’t sure how much shooting I was going to be able to do since I knew for a fact I would be dancing but, I did shoot. I danced a bit, too. Okay, that’s a lie. I danced a lot. Everyone was dancing and the vibe was amazing throughout the entire yard.

They were phenomenal.Polished and perfect. The entire band was on point with not one weak link to be found. From the vocals to the insane guitar solo and incredible work on keyboard and bass, That Main Squeeze had it on lock. Seriously. It is few and far between that I find myself enjoying a live show that much.

The part I found insane about it all was that despite the fact they are presently touring nationwide just having performed at Red Rocks, the show at the Yard was free. I would have easily paid on any given day to go see them live. You can’t even begin to imagine how much better they are live than on recording. Best part about it all was that despite playing all originals the entire night, they chose Redbone from Childish Gambino. That’s my jam.  I just have to say Wow. But this isn’t about my love of funk. This is about the photos, right?

Well, I picked out a few favorites for you all to see here however please make sure you stop by my Facebook page for the whole set. Let’s see how you like them.

Sunny South at Mardi Gras, Casino that is

Well well, here I am with a slightly bittersweet post. You see, while I do have some items on my backlog yet to edit, this set is a special set. Why you ask?

Anniversary throwback

Well well. It’s been a long time since I’ve been here. Life has had me plenty busy though I have not forgotten you all. I’m actually here today to bring you all a little something special. You see, yesterday marked my three year anniversary of shooting live music. While I have only had my Rebel a few months longer, shooting live music is my bag. It’s my thrill, my drug. To see the artists on stage, their live and passion for what they do, I get lost in the moment. I get lost in the feeling. (more…)

Front Row

In my experience as a photographer, there are times when you positively love the images you capture, and other times, not so much. This particular time out, I’m very much loving this set. I don’t know whether it was the lighting this time around or the fog machines, perhaps just how good I was feeling; I am insanely pleased with these photos. It of course helps that the majority of them are of my favorite local band.  (more…)

Spark a Rebelution

Hello friends and fans alike. It’s been some time since I’ve last posted an entry and I’m hoping you can forgive me. If you know me personally or read my personal blog www.queenmaryxo.com you’ll know I’ve recently suffered a death of someone very close to me. Although she was a great supporter of my work, I haven’t had it in me to get behind the lens. For the last two weeks I’ve been fighting with myself to snap out of it (no pun intended), yet it wasn’t as easy as that. (more…)

Upstream

Getting together my favorite shots for this particular post was a bit difficult.  I was shooting at a rather slow aperture to compensate for the low light and there was a lot of great shots I couldn’t use on account of them being too blurry. I wish I could already afford to upgrade my camera. However, for now I will just have to make do with what I got. Realistically speaking I will more than likely not be upgrading for about another year. In the meanwhile, I will have more time honing my skills and practice, practice, practice. (more…)

Everywhere, yet nowhere

I haven’t been taking many photographs lately. Quite honestly is been hard to find the time. It’s as if there’s never enough hours in the day. Still, I have to be behind the lens. It’s a hunger of mine that must be fed. So I do take Artemis with me everywhere I go. This weekend she went along with me to an Urban Rebel show at Nowhere Lounge on South Beach. She loves them as I do and I’m sure my pictures are proof of that. (more…)

Moonchine Bistro

I had the pleasure of going to Moonchine Bistro and Asian Lounge on Friday to watch my friends at Urban Rebel rock the place out. I was actually really excited to go to this show because I had heard it was an intimate venue. While most of the venues they perform at are considered small venues, this particular location was very small. (more…)
