Modern Mimes at Churchill’s

I’m always up for some new music and Femme Fest at Churchill’s was of no exception. Yes, I have been quite busy though productive. No, I don’t quit. This post completes band 2 of 3.I’m not sure which if any of you have gone out to Churchill’s Pub in Downtown Miami. If you have then you know just how dark this place can get though it definitely adds to it’s Dive Bar appeal. This place has been around forever. It’s like Miami’s version of the Whiskey Bar. It’s been around since the late 70’s and despite all the changes in the neighborhood, Churchill’s continues on.

As for being a photographer and shooting the performing bands, that’s not exactly a cake walk. As some of you may know, I dislike the use of flash photography shooting live bands. It’s a personal preference of mine simply because I love leaving the atmosphere of the gig intact. That being said, while I was confident Beast would not disappoint me, I was still rather apprehensive and was curious to see how he performed in the dark.

Well, in this particular set, I shot a band by the name of Modern Mimes. “Modern Mimes is an American music artist duo from Fort Lauderdale, FL. Modern Mimes consists of Adi Elcida Hernandez on vocals/guitar/sampling and Ernesto Paez on the double neck guitar bass. Their music can be best described as “Future Goth,” a term they coined in order to explain the fusion of alternative heavy guitar riffs, powerfully haunting vocals, subconscious provoking lyrics, electronic drums, and catchy pop melodies.”

They were great and definitely a new sound for my ears. Their set was played on what is called Stage 2 which is basically a spot on the side of the main floor. No stage, one on one with the crowd. It was fun to shoot for me, ducking and dodging between the fans. I suppose it pays to be fun-sized sometimes. I know I had a great time behind the lens. As for lighting, it was lit primarily in the blue/almost grey and have I mentioned, it was dark?

All I can say is that I came away quite pleased with the Beast’s performance. Even dimly lit he was able to pick up the sweat on their foreheads. As for my post work, I left the majority of the shots on the dark and gritty side because well, I was digging that vibe. Here are my favorite from their set and I hope you enjoy. There are a few more you are welcome to check out on my Facebook Page.

Thanks for stopping by.
